A 20 mile Mountain Marathon held in the lesser walked but yet beautiful area of the Brecon Beacons in South Wales, organised by Newport Outdoor Group (YHA) with the assistance of the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team. (See our section "YHA links" for a link to the Rescue Team's home web page.)

The route starts and finishes at Talybont and takes in the high expanse of Craig Pwllfa and the smaller yet in some ways more beautiful Tor y Foel. Between these the walker may be able to trace the course of an ancient industrial tramway, long since gone and barely discernable, or may choose to lunch at the cave where it is said Chartists kept an arms cache before marching down to the valleys to Newport to demand free elections to Parliament. Others will be more interested in getting their heads down and beating last years time, and indeed many of this years entrants will have taken part at least once before.

Every effort is made to make the walk a friendly but challenging day out for those interested in the active life. Tea and biscuits are served at the end of the walk and showers are available. There is a car park at the start/finish in Talybont. The organisers regret that overnight accommodation is not available.

All classes of walker are welcome, from the experienced fell runner to the inexperienced walker entering his or her first mountain marathon event. (This is NOT a race !)

WALK DETAILS

DATE OF WALK: Saturday 6th october 2012, pre-entry returns closing date 22nd September 2012.

LENGTH : 20 miles (over 18's only) or 10 miles

TOTAL ASCENT: 4,500 feet approx for 20 mile walk

ENTRY FEE:

TT20 Adults only (£10.00 in advance, £15 on the day)

TT10 Adults & Children (£5 in advance, £10 on the day).
