About me
I obtained my Ph.D. in 2008. The title of my thesis is “Exploiting The Bimodality of Speech in The Cocktail Party Problem” which covered areas in Speech and Video Signal Processing. Since 2009 I have been a research assistant to Prof. David Marshall in the School of Computer Science and Informatics at Cardiff University. Prior to my Ph.D I studied for a BEng (Hons) and MSc (with Distinction), both in Electronic Engineering.
Funding
Human Face Perception and Animation Network (HuFPA):
Together with Dr Job Van Der Schalk (School of Psychology) we obtained funding from the Graduate College to support a research staff network. The idea of the network is to bring together researchers who have an interest in human faces. The first meeting was on the 4th of May 2011, please see the HuFPA website for details of future meetings; members of staff and Ph.D students are welcome to attend. Please email myself or Dr Van Der Schalk for more details.
Research Interests
I am a member of the Visual Computing Group, the Human Factors Technology Centre (HFTC) and
Research Institute of Visual Computing.
My main reseach activities are in Human Face Animation. This includes the analysis of facial expressions and the modelling and synthesis of face dynamics. I am also currently working on audio-visual speech.
I have recently developed an interest and started working in the pereption of human expressions and gestures.
A general overview of the topics I am interested in are:
Cocktail Party Problem,
Bi-modality of human speech,
Face animation,
Face Perception,
Analysing Audio-Visual Speech.

Other Activities
Supervision
I currently co-supervise (secondary supervision) a Ph.D student, Ben Havell. Ben is investigating the best way to model co-articulation of audio-visual speech for the purpose of speech driven talking heads.
During the summers of 2009 and 2010 I co-supervised IASTE and Nuffield students in a variety of projects.
Teaching Activites
I have taught the following undergraduate subjects in Computer Science:
-
Spring 2011: Image Processing using the Fourier Transform, as part of the 3rd year module CM0311.
