We have met many of Interarhcie's features in the last Chapter and will mention its
search facilities later.
Interarchy's FTP window (Fig. 4.3) accepts information about a remote
file or directory, and then does one of the following:
Interarchie's FTP Window
- Brings up a listing of the remote directory - see The Listing Menu for more
information on how to use Listing windows
- Downloads a remote file
- Downloads a remote directory and all its contents, recursively
- Downloads a remote file and opens it in a program like SimpleText or BBEdit
http://www.barebones.com/products/bbedit/bbedit.html.
- Saves a bookmark file, to automatically re-enter the information entered into the
window for later use.
The FTP window has the following parts:
- Server
- -- The hostname of the FTP
server goes here; typically it will start with 'www.' or 'ftp.', but not always. This
machine must be running an FTP server, or 'daemon', and be configured to allow you
access.
- Path
- -- This is the location of the directory or file on the remote server. If
you don't know it, leave this field blank; you can navigate from the listing window to
find your file.
- Username
- -- If you have an account on this server, enter the name here; if
not, Interarchy will use the special anonymous account. If you type a username and
server that's stored in the Apple Keychain, Interarchy will automatically fill in the
Password field for you.
- Password
- -- If you have an account, it should have an associated
password, which goes here. Whatever you type will be shown as bullets, so others can't
read your password. Note: Passwords are not saved in bookmarks. If you don't have an
account, leave this blank to use the anonymous account.
- Get Listing (button #1)
- -- With
this option selected, the List button will bring up a Listing window, which you can use
to perform further actions, including Get Directory/File & View File. Typing Command-1
will set this option.
- Get Directory/File (button #2)
- -- This option will download the file
specified; if a directory is specified, it will download the directory and all its
contents; if the Path field is blank, Interarchy will download everything you can
access via FTP. Typing Command-2 will set this option.
- View File (button #3)
- -- The View
File command downloads the specified file and opens it in the text editor specified in
the Internet control panel, or SimpleText if none is configured. Typing Command-3 will
set this option.
- Save
- The Save button saves a bookmark file. Note: Fetch 3.0.1 uses a
compatible bookmark format, so FTP bookmark files are interchangeable between the two
programs; bookmarks for schemes Fetch doesn't support, like finger & whois, won't work
in Fetch. Passwords are not saved in bookmarks.
- Keychain
- -- If you click the Keychain
button , Interarchy will fill in your password from the Keychain. This button is dimmed
if the Apple Keychain isn't installed. If you type Option-Tab, Interarchy will clear
the path field, and fill in both username and password from the Keychain; if the
keychain doesn't have the information, username & password will be cleared.
- List/Get/View
- -- When you're finished entering information, click this button
to connect and take the specified action. The text of the button changes to match the
selected action. Add to Keychain With this option checked, Interarchy will save your FTP
information, including password, in the Apple Keychain, which stores account
information conveniently and securely.
The Apple Keychain is a place to store all your
passwords in one secure location. You unlock the keychain using a single master
password, and after it is unlocked, Interarchy can save your passwords in the Keychain
and read them out again later.
If Interarchy notices a host and username it has seen
before, it will retrieve the password from the Keychain and fill it in for you. The
Keychain is controlled through the Keychain Access control panel. If you have a URL on
the Clipboard, you can simply Paste it and Interarchy will put break it into the
appropriate fields.
The FTP Download command is the same as FTP Listing, except that it
preselects the Get Directory/Get File button (#2). The FTP Upload command brings up a
brief note explaining that uploads are managed through FTP Listing windows, and
provides an FTP Listing button.
