Biography - Vint Cerf

Vint Cerf is a computer scientist known as one of the fathers of internet, whose most significant contribution is taking part in the invention of TCP/IP(Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). TCP/IP is a protocol to ensure data transmission among different networks safely and accurately. Vint Cerf invented this protocol to improve the communication between computers, which is a crucial premise for the future development of Computer Science.

As for the background of the invention of TCP/IP, Vint Cerf once said that in the earliest days, that was a project he worked on with great passion because he wanted to solve the Defense Department’s problem: it did not want proprietary networking and it did’t want to be confined to a single network technology.

It is no doubt that TCP/IP is the most outstanding contribution Vint Cerf has made to Internet. TCP/IP make a series of regulations for computers to communicate in a safe and efficient way. In this digital age, computers bring us not only convenience but also some security problems such as personal privacy, information accuracy and so on. For example, people will use many applications on their cell phone everyday, which will create large amount of data on the internet. It is significant to protect these data as some important personal data will leak out with the prediction of big data. TCP/IP is the fundamental to avoid the risk of data leak. While people cannot live without the internet, the internet cannot without TCP/IP.

After the invention of TCP/IP, Vint Cerf was awarded A.M.TurningAward in 2004, which is an award known as “ the Nobel award in the field of computer science”. He works in Google at present and plays an important role to study advanced technologies and products. I believe that Vint Cerf will keep making contribution to the future development of internet.
