Linus Torvalds, a famous Finnish computer scientist, invented and led the project of a vital operation system kernel for the computer called Linux. The project he did had a significant impact because the kernel plays an essential role within the whole operation system, and Linux and its derivatives are broadly applied to the computer industry. Moreover, many fields use Linux as their operating system, such as computer science, space exploration (James 2021), electronic and portable devices, and so on.
When he was a child, he was already shown an interest in computers. He began learning to code when he was eleven on a simple home computer (Diamond 2001). He graduated from the University of Helsinki in the capital of Finland and got a master’s degree. During his university life, he got a personal computer with a UNIX system and discovered computer science and the operation system (Ricardson 1999). University life prompts him to have a successful career as a computer scientist, inventor and creator. With the using and discovery of his computer at that time, then, he developed the kernel of Linux and was the principal maintainer of the kernel.

Not only contribute to the Linux operation system, but Linus also considers that the software should be free (Brashares 2001). Besides, he has spoken out for open-source software. He supported that the software should be free for users and most people and contribute to the software and maintain them.

Decades have passed since the first original Linux system came out, and Linux was derived into many different versions. People can hear many of them, such as Ubuntu, Fedora, and Debian (Gabriel 2021). Although not all codes, architecture designs, content upgrades and maintenance are done by Linus, he still makes an outstanding contribution to the kernel even though he perhaps only writes a small part of the kernel and proposes many concepts for continuous improvement of the system.

As important as the Linux operation system, in 2005, Linus also created a distribution control tool called Git. As Linus thought, it is an open-source software for users to manage the codes during the development process and is helpful for teamwork (Scott and Ben 2014). Similar to Linux, it has also been upgraded and developed for many years, and it is well adapted to many developed environments today. As a result, it has become an indispensable tool in the computer field.
