James Gosling

Science

James Gosling is a software expert that most programmers will know. He is known because he is one of the founders of the Java language. At an early age, he showed an amazing talent for programming, such as designing video game consoles. In college, he earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1983. Carnegie Mellon University is also a school that many computer science students yearn for today.

James Gosling's work career was not smooth at the beginning. After graduation, he joined IBM and designed the NewS system, but it was not valued by the leaders at the time. So James Gosling chose to enter Sun. In 1990, James Gosling, in collaboration with Patrick Naughton and Mike Sheridan, developed Oak, which was later renamed Java. At the beginning, their idea was that home appliances would have a large market in the future, so they planned to use C++, but found that C++ was not suitable for the development of home appliance systems. So, the idea of creating a whole new programming language came to their minds. This also shows that different languages play different roles in different situations. There is no one language that fits all situations. No language can be called the best.

"Java is a high-level, class-based, object-oriented programming language that is designed to have as few implementation dependencies as possible. It is a general-purpose programming language intended to let programmers write once, run anywhere (WORA),meaning that compiled Java code can run on all platforms that support Java without the need to recompile (Java(programming language) Wikepedia Paragraphy 1)." Java has also become the first language that many programming beginners learn.

Personal honor

In 2002: He was awarded the Invention Prize by The Economist Magazine.

In 2007, he was awarded the Order of Canada, Second Class.

In 2013, he was elected as an ACM Fellow.

In 2015, he was awarded the IEEE Johann von Neumann Medal.

In 2018, he was included in the Computer History Museum's Wall of Honor for designing and creating the Java programming language.
