• lucrative new markets : interactive TV networks, the World Wide Web, and the high-speed networks
• Unix systems have jumped to an early lead : java, Neo etc
• Microsoft Network (MSN) (originally as an alternative to the internet - Microsoft altered its course and embraced the Internet
• Microsoft also embracing Java - and defining its own standard
• Markets of the near future : intranets - private corporate networks assembled with the same server software, client browsers, and publishing tools developed for the public Web
• An intranet could be as small as an internal LAN, or it could use the public Internet as a virtual WAN
• Hence - security - currently NT has better security than Unix
