Layering - 'PUTTING A STRUCTURE'-

• A number of layers within the operating system, each performing a specific function (such as process handling, memory management, I/O etc).
• Also useful as a security model (come to later)
• Example include MULTICS (concentric rings - parameter checking for validity before proceeding with the call).
