Criteria for choosing Disk Block Size

  1. Too large : waste space for small files
  2. Too small : Too many pointers
  3. Memory buffer space - needed for :
    current index block
    block being read or written

Typical Block Sizes :
Unix : 512 bytes or 1024 bytes
IBM 370 : can differ between files
