In this module I have learnt how to do 3 main things: create a webpage with html, design a webpage and style it with CSS and also the basics of programming with JavaScript to figure out solutions to solve different problems. On top of this, I have gained awareness of how to think in a computational way which will help with many things in my life including the rest of my education. I began this course with no knowledge whatsoever on how to program or build a webpage so had a few difficulties along the way. These difficulties included not knowing how to get started with programming which was the first main hurdle for me. I had no idea of the software needed or the apps which can be used to get started with building a website or solving problems with JavaScript. Knowing these things, for example that you’re able to write code using Visual Studio Code and that you can then run it in a browser is invaluable to the programming tasks I will encounter on the rest of my course. I now know that this module will help with my learning on the rest of my course – MSc Computational and Data Journalism - due to the new way of thinking I have learnt as well as the programming languages. A module which I have recently started called Fundamentals of Programming is directly linked as I am continuing to learn more about how to program using JavaScript which is something this module has directly equipped me for through the introduction and basics which I have learnt. It will help me with my new module not only through the direct learning of JavaScript but also through the HTML I have learnt to use. I now have a greater understanding of different programming languages which will help as I begin to learn new one’s such as python. As someone who did an undergraduate in Chemistry, this way of thinking is completely new to me however after completing this module I have no doubt that I am equipped with the skills needed for programming in the rest of my Masters program. Going forward, I will be using the ways of thinking I have learnt to both enhance my productivity and assist in my learning in my new programming module. Overall, this module has been an enjoyable and invaluable experience for my learning and understanding.
