Motivation

• On shared memory vector supercomputers large, optimized software libraries exist:
  • BLAS, EISPACK, LINPACK, LAPACK,
  • NAG, IMSL, ESSL,
• Little such software runs efficiently on current and emerging parallel architectures
• The development of high-quality, portable software libraries for concurrent computers as a key enabling technology essential to the more widespread use of such machines.
