• Consider the standard nonblocking receive routine:

        mpi_irecv (
                  OUT start_of_buffer,
                  IN  max_number_of_items,
                  IN  datatype,
                  IN  source_rank,
                  IN  tag,
                  IN  communicator,
                  OUT request_id,
                  OUT error_code)

• Receive is not passed a return status object.
