How to navigate your web pages?

Depending on your Web site content you may want to organise the distribution of pages in a different manner.

Comparison to standard book and other layouts is frequently adopted.

There are a few common ways to organise you data for easy navigation:

Hierarchies

-- A top level (e.g. Home) page provides links to sub levels.

Linear

-- Pages follow consecutively in order. Much like a standard text-based book.

Linear with alternatives

-- The logical consecutive order is maintained but users may choose alternative pages. For example: Pages may refer to platform specific details.

Hierarchical/Linear

-- a combination of the above. Top level could be an table of contents pointing to chapters of a book which are then read linearly. Users choose which chapters to read.

Web

-- No real organisation. Local links may be related.
