Archie: Searching for FTPable files

• Is implemented at selected sites to facilitate the location and retrieval of specific files
• Can be accessed directly by telnetting to an archie server or remotely by activating an archie client
• Archie servers work by periodically connecting to every know Anonymous FTP site and downloading a directory listing from the site and updating a local database
• When a user (or client process) connects to the server the database is searched for relevant information
• Originally developed as a project by students and volunteer staff at McGill University in Montreal
