I saw the Dunfermline gig. And, as you can see, the actual day is unclear. I remember looking at JMs guitar and registering the shape of the double cutaway Melody Maker. But it's a long time ago Rod. I later discovered that there seems to have been plenty of mixing and matching at Gibsons. I've often seen that same guitar with, "Les Paul Junior," on the headstock. Anyway, it had a rich sound through the Marshall stack. Meeting of the Spirits left me flattened. It probably was the guitar used on Jack Johnston, or something very similar.
What follows is rather a strange recollection. I narrowly missed meeting JM on the night of that Lifetime show. I went to the gig with my good friend Eric. He and I were two poverty stricken kids who lived pretty much hand to mouth in central Edinburgh. Dunfermline is about 25 miles from Edinburgh, so we went there on the bus. After the show, Eric asked me if I wanted to go and hang out with the band back at the hotel in Edinburgh. I thought....this must be some strange fantasy of Eric's, for sure. Eric explained that some weeks previously, Jack Bruce had stayed at his house (read hovel) for some days. By now, I knew Eric had to be looped. It turned out that Bruce had been given Eric's address by a mutual friend. Jack Bruce had showed up at Eric's unannounced, and had asked to stay.
According to Eric, Bruce was attempting to put some distance between himself and the lifestyle he had been living for some years. Basically, he needed to stop doing drugs. He took off and hid out for a while in a place where no one knew him. Eric told me this story on the way back to town. I couldn't quite believe it. But I guess that Bruce did well to choose Eric. Eric was an almost saintly person. He was a few years older than I. He was highly intelligent and very kind.
We marched up to the door of the posh mid town hotel. Eric managed to get us past the doorman. Sure enough, there were Tony Williams and Bruce sitting in the corner of the lounge. Eric and Jack Bruce were all smiles and proceeded to shake hands and chat for a while. JM had already retired to his room for meditation. Larry Young was nowhere to be seen. I talked with Tony Willimans. I do remember mentioning that his snare drum sounded like a gun going off through the monster PA they had. He looked pleased. The man was about five feet of pure dynamite.
If anyone had told me I would write of this event 32 years later, I'd have been truly gobsmacked dude...Stuart.
