The best piece (to my ears) is "All In The Family". It's so majestic, loaded with pathos. Twenty two years couldn't downscale this baby. I'm playing this a lot on my guitar. I'd like to share some observations with you. It's a pendulum-like movement, where the harmonic movement (the vamp) swings from C9 to Gm9. The bass figure (rather simplified here) kicks in after a brilliant drums and percussion intro. You can achieve quite good results if you tape yourself doing the C9 - Gm9 comping, and then solo over it, in the vein that McLaughlin exploits (or jam with a friend, who'd be willing to bang on two chords over and over again). It can really be an uplifting musical experience. The bass gets a lot more complicated as the composition unfolds, but I'm not sure if I could cover that today. Any additions or imrovements will be warmly appreciated. I'm sure a lot of you will know the names of modes John is using here. If you don't mind, please let us know. I used to know all the modes etc., but now I'm just playing by ear, and I've kind of forgotten tons of theory I used to know. -------------------------------------------------------------- John McLaughlin mailing list list info: http://www.cs.ut.ee/~andres_d/mclaughlin/mlist.html Next message: one-word@ml.ee: "Re: Stan Clarke" Previous message: one-word@ml.ee: "Re: JVC Jazz Festival--Emergency and the birth of fusion"
