Previous: Interconnection of Networks
- In order to connect individual networks (e.g LANs) to the outside
world
- computers called gateways as employed provide all interconnections
between physical networks
- Sometimes called routers
- Sometimes act
as proxies -- servers that give the false impression the internal
network is directly connected to the outside world.
- Secure Mechanism
- Good at logging Internet activity.
- Extra overheads -- client/server programs may need modifying.
- Most Web browsers support proxying
