Gateways

• In order to connect individual networks (e.g LANs) to the outside world
• computers called gateways as employed provide all interconnections between physical networks
• Sometimes called routers
• Sometimes act as proxies -- servers that give the false impression the internal network is directly connected to the outside world.
  • Secure Mechanism
  • Good at logging Internet activity.
  • Extra overheads -- client/server programs may need modifying.
  • Most Web browsers support proxying
