MatrixViewer software
MatrixViewer is a Java Web Start app that allows the viewing of
interaction or flow data by linearization of 2-d space.
Troubleshooting
- Note that Java 1.6 or later is required to use this program.
- MatrixViewer may fail to launch on some machines with low amounts of memory: if
this is the case, try the low memory version but note that
this will be unable to load larger data sets (including the ward-level demo
data).
- The Google Chrome browser may warn that the application can harm your computer.
Personally I think that's a bit paranoid - Java Web Start applications run in a
sandbox and can only access the disk if you give them explicit permission (which you
might do, say, to load some of your own data into the program). Still, I guess you
have to trust that I haven't found a security hole in Java and am using it with
malicious intent... what can I say?
Please note that this download contains data from the UK Census 2001, for demonstration purposes - reproduced under the terms of the Click-Use Licence (I am required by law to say that). This is interesting to look at with the MatrixViewer tool! However, you are not allowed to reproduce this data. The software itself, on the other hand, is released under the terms of the GPL (source code here). If you want to add many features to it you will probably want to start splitting the source into multiple files. If using it with your own data you will almost certainly want to use Diansheng Guo's POLO program to order your geographic points.
