Welcome

This is the course site for CM0151 Fundamentals of Information Systems (Autumn 2007).

The course is intended to impart a basic understanding of the structure, role, design and use of information systems, with a particular focus on the role of information systems in an organisational context.

The course can be conceptually split into four parts, corresponding to four key questions about information systems.
Firstly, we will examine WHAT information systems are, the fundamental principles and common types of information system in use today. In parallel, we will explore WHY information systems are used in an organisational context and will look at some reasons why an organisation may decide to develop a particular information system.
Next, we will take a look at HOW information systems are developed, focussing on issues which are particularly relevant to developing information systems in an organisational context.
Finally, we will consider WHO is involved in the development, use and maintenance of information systems, considering both career paths through the industry and the legal and ethical issues faced by information systems practitioners and users.
